A family weekend near Heviz: things to do with kids in late autumn
The western end of Lake Balaton does not shut down for families when the summer crowds leave. In November you can still meet water buffalo, row across a lake beneath a town and spend a rainy morning watching 75 model trains. Here is what stays open, and how to turn it into a relaxed weekend.
A family weekend near Heviz works well in late autumn if you mix outdoor and indoor stops. The best options for children are the Kápolnapuszta Water Buffalo Reserve, the Tapolca Lake Cave with its underground boat trip, and the model railway and indoor playhouse at Keszthely’s Festetics Palace. All are open in November and within about an hour of Nemesbük.
What is open for families in late autumn?
Most of the big family attractions stay open through winter, just with shorter hours. The table below shows November hours as published on the official websites in October 2026 – always worth checking again before you set off.

Water buffalo at Kis-Balaton: what will the children see?
The Kápolnapuszta reserve is home to Hungary’s largest herd of water buffalo, and few children are unimpressed. Run by the Balaton Uplands National Park, it has a walkway, a lookout tower, an interactive exhibition, a petting area and a playground aimed at four- to fourteen-year-olds.
- Tickets: the park’s 2026 price list includes a family ticket for two adults and two children (HUF 5,900 as of October 2026).
- Safety: the animals are behind an electric fence, so keep little ones close.
- Dogs: welcome on a lead only.
- Bonus stop: the Great Crested Grebe nature trail on nearby Kányavári Island is free to walk all year round.
In November the ticket office closes 45 minutes before the site does, and the light fades by four, so plan the buffalo for the morning. Our Kis-Balaton guide covers the wider wetland and its birdlife.
How long does the Tapolca Lake Cave take?
Allow about an hour and a half for the full visit, including a boat trip across the lit, blue-tinged water of the underground lake. For most children this is the highlight of the weekend – not many people can say they have rowed through a cave beneath a town.
Before you go down, the visitor centre’s exhibition covers dripstones, bats and prehistoric finds. The cave stays at around 18°C all year, which in November is often warmer than outside, though a light jumper is still sensible. A Hungarian-language guided tour is included, and audio guides are available in other languages. The 2026 prices include a family ticket; check the national park’s website for current rates.
Tapolca’s small town centre is right next to the cave, so there is time for a short wander and a hot chocolate before heading back.
Keszthely with kids: trains, a playhouse and a museum
Keszthely is the best rainy-day fallback, because several indoor options sit close together. Within the Festetics Palace complex, three things stand out for children.
Historical model railway exhibition
The palace describes it as one of the largest in Europe: 75 trains run on more than 2.7 km of track across 503 square metres, through Hungarian, Austrian and German scenery. Motion-sensor features let children set things moving. Allow around 40 minutes.
Historical Playhouse
Set in the estate’s former milking house, this indoor play centre is for children aged 0–10, with a ship-shaped climbing frame, slides and a small, hands-on exhibition about cows and dairy. Weekday tickets are cheaper than weekend ones; check current prices on the palace website.
Carriages and the bird park
Older children usually enjoy the carriage and sleigh collection, and the palm house and bird park are open Tuesday to Sunday, 10:00–16:00, in November. For more on the palace and its gardens, see our Keszthely guide.
Near the lakeside, the Balaton Museum is another good choice, with over 700 square metres of displays and interactive games about the lake’s wildlife and holiday history, plus a “Balaton retro” exhibition running until April 2027. It is closed on Sundays and Mondays.
The lakeshore in autumn: is it worth it?
Yes – an empty, quiet Balaton shore has its own charm. Walk the pier at Keszthely, skim a few stones and let the children run off steam under the trees of Helikon Park after the palace. Pack hats: it is always colder by the water than in town.
If you would rather have woods than water, the Festetics Imre Experience Centre in Gyenesdiás has native Hungarian farm breeds and large game animals, plus an interactive visitor centre. From 2 November it opens Wednesday to Sunday with shorter winter hours, and in 2025 it closed for its winter break on 18 December, so check before you go.

Tips for travelling with young children
- It gets dark around four in November, so do outdoor activities in the morning.
- The Festetics Palace and the Balaton Museum are closed on Mondays; the museum also closes on Sundays.
- The spa operator does not recommend bathing in Lake Heviz for children under 12; the heated children’s pool by the lake is a seasonal service, so ask ahead in late autumn.
- Keep wellies or waterproof shoes and spare socks in the car – paths around Kis-Balaton can be muddy.
Where to stay with children
With a family, it matters to have somewhere calm to come back to after a long day. Nemesbük is a quiet village next to Heviz, within easy reach of everything above. This is where HillGate Apartments opens on 1 June 2027: eight new one- and two-bedroom apartments, each with its own terrace and parking space – the two-bedroom layouts make a comfortable family base.
