Rainy day things to do in Heviz and around Lake Balaton
Autumn at the western end of Lake Balaton brings golden vineyards and the odd grey, drizzly day. The good news is that Heviz, Keszthely and the surrounding area are full of warm, sheltered and genuinely atmospheric places to spend one. Here are the best, with practical details.
The best rainy day things to do in Heviz are bathing in the lake itself (the water stays warm all autumn), the indoor thermal pools at the Heviz spa, Festetics Palace and its exhibitions in Keszthely, the Balaton Museum, the Tapolca Lake Cave, Kehida Termál and a pre-booked wine tasting. Most are within about 20 minutes’ drive of Nemesbük.
Can you swim in Lake Heviz when it rains?
Yes, and many regulars prefer it. Floating in warm water while light rain falls on the surface is part of the charm. The spring keeps the lake at 22°C or above even in winter. Stay out of the water during thunderstorms, though.
Opening hours shorten in autumn. According to the spa’s official website (as of October 2026):
- 5–24 October: 9:00–17:30, bathing until 17:00;
- 25 October 2026 – 14 February 2027: 9:00–16:30, bathing until 16:00.
Note that the central bathhouse standing on the lake is currently closed, so bathing is outdoors only. There are covered rest areas, however, so you can stay dry between dips. A full-price three-hour ticket costs HUF 4,500 and a day ticket HUF 7,500. Prices and hours can change, so check before you set off. For more on the lake itself, see our Lake Heviz guide.
Where can you swim indoors in Heviz?
The simplest option is the Indoor Bath and Therapy Centre (Fedett Fürdő és Terápiás Centrum) of the Heviz spa, on Schulhof promenade. It has thermal pools under one roof and houses the therapy department too. The official website states that, from 1 March 2026 until further notice, it opens at 7:00 on weekdays and 8:00 at weekends, with tickets sold until 16:00 and closing at 17:00. An adult three-hour ticket has cost HUF 3,400 since April 2026 (as of October 2026) – worth checking before you go.
For a larger leisure-pool atmosphere, Kehida Termál in Kehidakustány is around a quarter of an hour’s drive from Heviz and includes a covered thermal pool. Check its website for current opening times.
What is there to see at Festetics Palace on a wet day?
Festetics Palace in Keszthely is probably the best bad-weather outing in the area, easily filling half a day. According to the palace’s website (as of October 2026), in autumn and winter it is open Tuesday to Sunday, 10:00–17:00, with the ticket office closing at 16:30. It is closed on Mondays, on 1 November and from 23 to 25 December.
- Aristocratic interiors: more than twenty rooms, including the Helikon Library, whose collection holds over 86,000 items. The oldest volume is János Thuróczy’s Chronica Hungarorum from 1488. Allow about 50 minutes.
- Carriage exhibition: more than 60 horse-drawn vehicles from the 18th and 19th centuries – carriages, coaches and sleighs.
- Historical model railway: by the palace’s own account one of Europe’s largest, spread over 503 m² with more than 2.7 km of track in H0 scale. A hit with children and adults alike.
- The hunting exhibition and the aristocratic travels exhibition are part of the same complex.
Several exhibitions can be visited on a combined ticket. Prices vary by season, so check the palace’s official website for current rates.
What does the Balaton Museum in Keszthely offer?
The Balaton Museum tells the story of the lake’s nature and history: its permanent exhibition covers more than 700 m², with around 10,000 objects and interactive games. Two temporary exhibitions run this autumn:
- Balaton Retro – until 30 April 2027;
- A Century of Geodesy – from 9 October 2026 to 3 April 2027.
The museum opens Tuesday to Saturday, 9:00–17:00, and is closed on Sundays and Mondays. A full-price ticket costs HUF 3,000 (as of October 2026); check holiday opening times before you go. A good pairing: museum in the morning, lunch in the town centre, palace in the afternoon.
Is the Tapolca Lake Cave worth the drive?
Yes, if you want something truly memorable. Beneath the centre of Tapolca you row a small boat across an underground lake, and the boat ride is included in the ticket. It is roughly half an hour’s drive from Heviz, or about 45–55 minutes from Nemesbük.
- Opening hours: 1 September – 31 December, 9:30–17:00, ticket office closes at 16:00. Closed 24–26 December and 31 December – 1 January.
- Prices (as of October 2026): adult HUF 5,000, child (3–14) HUF 3,400, family ticket (2+2) HUF 15,000.
- Time needed: about an hour and a half.
- What to wear: the cave stays at about 18°C all year, so bring a jumper.
Individual visitors cannot book in advance – only groups of 15 or more – so simply turn up, but check the national park’s website for current hours and prices first.
A wine tasting for a rainy afternoon
A cellar is a cellar whatever the weather: cool, quiet and welcoming. The hills around Heviz belong to the Cserszeg district of the Balaton-felvidék wine region, where the aromatic Cserszegi Fűszeres grape was bred in 1960. Several small wineries offer tastings by appointment, such as Bődy Borászat in Cserszegtomaj or Varsás Pince in Gyenesdiás (the latter for groups of seven or more), so on a wet day it pays to phone in the morning.
In the evening, the wine bars around the 13th-century church in Egregy, Heviz’s old vineyard quarter, are a cosy place for a glass. One important rule: Hungary has zero tolerance for drinking and driving, so do not drive after a tasting.
