Christmas markets near Heviz and Lake Balaton: an Advent guide

December at the western end of Lake Balaton is quieter than summer, but far from dark. Heviz lights up its streets, Keszthely gathers on its main square for Sunday candle-lighting, and the thermal lake keeps steaming through it all. Here is what has been announced for 2026 so far, and what to expect where the programme is not out yet.

The Christmas markets near Heviz run through the whole of Advent. According to the published 2026 listings, Heviz’s festive programme runs from 28 November 2026 to 3 January 2027, and Keszthely’s from 29 November to 3 January. Both feature festive lights, food and craft stalls, and candle-lighting on the Sundays of Advent. Check the details shortly before you travel.

When does Advent start in 2026?

The first Sunday of Advent in 2026 falls on 29 November, so the four Advent Sundays are 29 November and 6, 13 and 20 December. In Hungary, St Nicholas Day (Mikulás) on 6 December is a children’s favourite, and this year it lands on the second Advent Sunday. Most towns around Lake Balaton open their markets and light the first candle on or around that first weekend.

Heviz: “Festive Light Magic”

Heviz calls its Advent season “Ünnepi fényvarázs” – Festive Light Magic. According to the listing on Hungary’s national tourism portal, hellohungary.hu, it runs from 28 November 2026 to 3 January 2027, which means more than a month of festive atmosphere.

  • The market: food and handmade crafts at the event space on Kölcsey utca; one events listing gives the hours as 16:00–20:00 daily.
  • The setting: decorated Christmas trees, festive lights and light projections on the town’s buildings.
  • The programme: music and candle-lighting at several spots around town.

The real treat in Heviz is pairing an afternoon in the thermal lake with an evening stroll among the lights. The water does not drop below 22°C even in winter – our Lake Heviz guide explains more. Check the spa’s official website for opening hours over the holidays.

Keszthely: the Christmas market on Fő tér

In Keszthely, Advent centres on Fő tér, the main square. The 2026 programme, organised by the Goldmark Károly Cultural Centre, is listed from 29 November 2026 to 3 January 2027, with the organisers reserving the right to make changes.

The announcement promises festive lighting, a town nativity scene, food and craft stalls, a children’s play area and concerts, plus candle-lighting with the town’s historic churches every Sunday of Advent.

What about market opening hours? We have not yet found the exact 2026 hours. In the official 2024 programme, craft stalls opened at weekends from 15:00 to 20:00 and food and drink stalls from Wednesday to Sunday, 15:00–20:00. Treat this as a rough guide only, and check the keszthely.hu events page before you go.

The Festetics Palace in December

If you fancy some culture before the market, the Festetics Palace stays open in December. Its 2026 timetable (as of October 2026) lists Tuesday to Sunday, 10:00–17:00, from 1 to 22 December; it is closed from 23 to 25 December and open 10:00–14:00 on 31 December – check before you go. See our half-day Keszthely guide for more.

How to plan an Advent weekend

  • Timing: candle-lighting usually takes place on Sunday afternoons, so Saturday–Sunday weekends are the most atmospheric.
  • Bathe by day, browse by night: the Heviz market opens in the late afternoon, which pairs neatly with an afternoon at the lake.
  • Do not drive after mulled wine: Hungary has a zero-tolerance drink-driving limit, so use a taxi or an arranged transfer for Keszthely or Badacsony.
  • Around the holidays: many attractions close or shorten their hours on 24–26 and 31 December – the Kápolnapuszta Water Buffalo Reserve, for example, is closed on 24, 25 and 31 December.
  • With children: our family weekend guide lists attractions near Keszthely that stay open in winter.
  • What to wear: layers, a hat and gloves – evenings on open squares and by the lake get properly cold.

Where to stay near Heviz for Advent

After the lights and the bustle of the market, it is good to come back somewhere quiet. Nemesbük is 3.4 km from Heviz and 13 km from Keszthely, so both markets are only minutes away.
