Kis-Balaton in autumn: the buffalo reserve, Kányavári Island and birdwatching

In autumn the Kis-Balaton wetlands grow quieter, the reed beds turn gold and migrating birds stop to rest. Here is which sites you can visit on your own, what is open in October and November, and how to fit it all into a day from Nemesbük.

Kis-Balaton in autumn is easiest to explore at three places: the Kápolnapuszta Water Buffalo Reserve, open daily all year apart from a few holidays; Kányavári Island, free to walk year-round; and, until the end of October, the Fenékpuszta visitor centre with guided walks to Diás Island. Each is roughly 25–45 minutes’ drive from Nemesbük.

What is Kis-Balaton, and why go in autumn?

Kis-Balaton (“Little Balaton”) is a marshy wetland of reeds and open water where the River Zala flows towards Lake Balaton, and part of the Balaton Uplands National Park. It has been on the Ramsar list of wetlands of international importance since 1979, and the national park says 250 bird species have been recorded here so far. Most of the area is strictly protected, so you can only visit a few spots on your own; the rest is open with a professional guide.

Autumn is a rewarding time because the wetland is a resting place for migrating birds. According to the national park, tens of thousands of migrating birds arrived to rest or overwinter in the very first year after the wetland was restored. There are also far fewer visitors than in the summer high season.

What can you see at the Kápolnapuszta Water Buffalo Reserve?

Near the village of Balatonmagyaród, the reserve is home to Hungary’s largest herd of water buffalo and plays a part in conserving the native Hungarian buffalo. There is an interactive exhibition on the plants and wildlife of Kis-Balaton, a nature trail with picnic spots, a lookout tower opened in 2022, an area where you can stroke the animals, a playground for ages 4–14, a snack bar and a gift shop. Dogs are welcome on a lead, but only on the nature trail.

With children, this is the easiest stop of the day: the exhibition works in any weather, there is a lookout tower to climb, and the playground and petting area burn off any remaining energy. Allow at least an hour or an hour and a half, and come in the morning if you can, as it closes at 16:00 from November.

How do you get onto Kányavári Island?

Kányavári Island, beside Balatonmagyaród, is the part of Kis-Balaton you can explore freely. You cross onto it by a wooden bridge, and the national park says it is open to visitors all year. The Great Crested Grebe nature trail starts here, and there are two observation towers on the island. You do not need a guide or a ticket.

If you only have an hour or two and want to see birds, this is the place. Early morning and late afternoon are the quietest times, and when the birds are most active. The national park recommends walking clothes and proper shoes on all its trails, which is especially true in autumn when the ground is often wet.

When can you visit Diás Island and the visitor centre?

The Kis-Balaton Visitor Centre, at Tőzegtelep on the southern edge of Keszthely (Fenékpuszta), introduces the wetland’s wildlife through interactive exhibits and has links to Tüskevár, a much-loved Hungarian novel by István Fekete set in the Kis-Balaton marshes. Guided walks leave from here for Diás Island, where you will find a reconstruction of the reed hut of Matula, the novel’s old fisherman, and a memorial room to the writer. The island can only be visited on a guided tour.

For autumn 2026, the national park lists (as of October 2026):

  • Visitor centre: in October, Friday to Sunday 9:00–16:00, and daily from 23 October to 1 November. Closed in November and December. Adult ticket 3,500 HUF.
  • Guided walk to Diás Island: 1–22 October, Friday to Sunday at 10:00 and 13:00; 23 October – 1 November, daily at the same times. Closed from 2 November. The walk takes 1.5–2 hours; adult ticket 2,700 HUF.

So in the last days of October there are departures every day, but the national park requires advance registration for the Diás Island walk, so contact the visitor centre beforehand to book and confirm departure times.

What to bring to Kis-Balaton in autumn

  • Binoculars: most birds stay in the reeds or across the water, so you will miss a lot without them.
  • Waterproof shoes: paths can be muddy in autumn.
  • Layers: it is windy up on the towers and chilly first thing.
  • A flask of tea or coffee: very welcome on a birdwatching walk; the buffalo reserve also has a snack bar.
  • Cash and a card: check payment options in advance.
  • A quiet pace: keep voices low and stay on the paths – this is a strictly protected area.

A suggested day out from Nemesbük

  1. Early morning: Kányavári Island, about 27 km and 35–40 minutes by car. Walk the trail and watch from the tower.
  2. Late morning: the Kápolnapuszta buffalo reserve, about 7 km from the island. Exhibition, lookout tower and buffalo.
  3. Afternoon (Friday to Sunday, until late October): the visitor centre and the 13:00 walk to Diás Island – or simply head back to Nemesbük.

To fit Kis-Balaton into a longer stay, see our three-day itinerary. Fenékpuszta is on the edge of Keszthely, so a visit to the Festetics Palace makes a natural companion on another day.

Evening: back to the quiet

After a breezy autumn day in the marshes, somewhere warm is what you want. Nemesbük sits at the foot of the Keszthely Hills, 3.4 km from Heviz, so you can end the day in the thermal lake. From 1 June 2027, HillGate Apartments will welcome guests here with eight apartments, a Finnish sauna and a jacuzzi.
