Heviz spa treatments: what to expect from your first cure
Plenty of visitors come to Heviz for more than a swim. They come for mud packs, the weight bath and physiotherapy. This guide explains what the main treatments are, which ones need a medical examination first, and how to plan your stay around them.
In short: Heviz spa treatments are built on three pillars – bathing in the medicinal water, Heviz mud and the weight bath – which together make up the Heviz Traditional Cure, recognised as a Hungarikum. Most medical treatments are only available after an examination by a specialist. This is not medical advice: a doctor decides what suits you.
What is the Heviz Traditional Cure?
The Heviz Traditional Cure rests on three elements: bathing in medicinal thermal water, Heviz medicinal mud and the weight bath. According to the operator, Hévízgyógyfürdő és Szent András Reumakórház (the Heviz spa and St Andrew’s Hospital for Rheumatology), the cure has been a Hungarikum – an officially recognised Hungarian national treasure – since 2015. In the same year, a certification scheme was launched in Heviz for providers offering classic treatments based on the local thermal water.
St Andrew’s Hospital specialises in musculoskeletal and rheumatological conditions. Treatments are offered at the lake’s therapy department in the Festetics bathhouse (Festetics Fürdőház), at the Indoor Bath and Therapy Centre, and at the therapy department of Hotel Spa Hévíz.
Which Heviz spa treatments are available?
The main Heviz therapies listed on the operator’s official website:
- Lake and pool bathing: bathing in Lake Heviz or the indoor medicinal pools. For the practical side of the lake, see our Lake Heviz guide.
- Heviz medicinal mud: the operator says its mineral content and good heat retention make it suitable for treatment. It is applied to the areas a doctor recommends, or to the whole body.
- Weight bath: a gentle traction treatment in which the patient is suspended in the water so that sections of the spine or the large joints of the lower limbs are stretched. It was invented by Dr Károly Moll, a chief physician at Heviz.
- Therapeutic massage, underwater jet massage and physiotherapy: often added alongside the bathing treatments.
- Drinking cure: the thermal water can also be taken as a drinking cure, and the operator advises a medical consultation beforehand. The drinking well is in the lobby of the Indoor Bath.
Do you need a medical examination?
For medical treatments, yes. The weight bath requires an examination by a specialist at all three venues, and therapeutic mud is applied to the areas the doctor specifies. At the examination, one of the hospital’s rheumatologists draws up a treatment plan.
Some wellness-style services – such as a Heviz mud massage or a wellness mud wrap – are available without an examination, but they are not a substitute for medical treatment. At the lake’s therapy department, treatment packages are only available after a prior health check. As of October 2026, the operator’s price lists put the specialist examination at 17,000 HUF – worth checking before you travel.
Who should avoid the thermal water?
According to the operator, bathing in the Heviz thermal water is not recommended for people with infectious diseases, malignant tumours, heart failure, circulatory disorders, thrombosis or other blood disorders, asthma or high blood pressure, or during pregnancy. Without a doctor’s advice, sessions of no more than 30 minutes are recommended.
This list is for general information only, is not exhaustive and does not replace a medical examination. If you have a chronic condition, take regular medication or are simply unsure, talk to your own doctor before you travel, and to the spa’s doctor on arrival.
Can you get treatments on the Hungarian health service?
Only if you are insured in Hungary, and only with a specialist’s prescription. Under Hungarian rules (Decree 5/2004 EüM), certain balneotherapy treatments are partly funded by the national health insurer, NEAK. For visitors insured elsewhere, the simplest route is to book treatments privately – check with your own insurer and the spa about any other options.
| Question | What the official sources say |
|---|---|
| Who prescribes? | A specialist, such as a rheumatologist, orthopaedic, rehabilitation or physical medicine specialist. |
| How many sessions? | Up to four types of treatment per prescription, with up to 15 sessions of each. |
| How often? | Two courses in total per calendar year. |
| Heviz in practice | At the Indoor Bath, at least six treatments per type must be taken up, within 56 days. |
One practical detail applies to everyone: the Indoor Bath states that it cannot schedule treatment appointments for stays of one week or less, and treatments start at allocated times based on availability rather than immediately. As of October 2026, therapy treatments there run on weekdays from 7am to 3pm – worth checking before you travel.
How long should you stay for a cure?
Because of these rules, a treatment course is not a weekend activity: plan for more than a week. A long weekend is better suited to lake bathing and the wellness services that need no examination – our long weekend in Heviz, Keszthely and Lake Balaton itinerary has ideas.
Season matters too: at the lake’s Festetics bathhouse, the weight bath is only available from April to November, according to the operator, while the Indoor Bath and Hotel Spa Hévíz offer it all year. Note also that the lake’s central bathhouse has been closed since spring 2025, so lake bathing is currently outdoors only.
